WACO, Texas – Communities across Texas are mourning the loss of a dedicated public servant who wore two uniforms in a life committed to protecting others. Trooper John Ross Westerman of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) passed away after a long battle with stage 4 colon cancer. He was 44 years old.
A Lifelong Career in Service
Before becoming a Texas State Trooper in 2018, Westerman served the Houston community for over a decade as a Houston firefighter. He transferred his dedication to public safety to the Waco area, where he served with the Texas DPS until the very end, demonstrating unwavering commitment even while battling his illness.
A ‘Family Man’ Above All Else
Beyond his badges, John Westerman was first and foremost a devoted family man. His wife, Carol, and their three children, Cullen, Samuel, and Eleanor, were the center of his world.
“Above every badge and uniform, John was a family man,” a statement from loved ones noted. “Those closest to him find peace in knowing he is now in the arms of Jesus.”
Final Arrangements and Call to Honor
John Westerman will be laid to rest this week in Bryan, Texas. The family and the law enforcement community are asking the public to honor his memory, his service, his sacrifice, and the full life he led.
The Texas DPS, the Houston Fire Department, and communities from Waco to Houston extend their deepest condolences and ask for continued prayers for Carol Westerman and their children during this profoundly difficult time.
