MANHATTAN, N.Y. – The New York City community is mourning a Queens man who died in a crash while riding an electric bicycle that authorities say was capable of traveling more than three times the legal city speed limit.
The victim has been identified as Jason Galindo, 32, of the Elmhurst neighborhood.
A Fatal Crash at the UN
The tragic accident occurred late Tuesday night near the United Nations Headquarters on First Avenue. Police reports state that Galindo was riding a HappyRun G100 Pro electric bicycle northbound in the bike lane when he lost control near E. 45th Street and crashed into a barrier.
Emergency responders transported him to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from a severe head injury.
E-Bike Exceeded Legal Speed Limit
A critical detail from the investigation is that the HappyRun G100 Pro model involved is capable of reaching speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. However, New York City regulations strictly limit e-bikes, e-scooters, and pedal-assist bicycles to a maximum speed of 15 mph on public streets.
Authorities are investigating whether the bike’s excessive speed was a factor in the crash. The circumstances of why the bike, which was not street-legal under city rules, was being operated at that location remain unclear.
Remembering a Community-Minded Young Man
Galindo is remembered by friends and the Elmhurst community as a vibrant, energetic individual who was actively involved in local youth programs and known for his positive influence.
His death has sparked renewed discussions about the dangers of high-speed, unregulated electric mobility devices on city streets. It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to safety regulations designed to protect all road users.
As the city mourns his loss, Galindo’s family and friends are left to grapple with the sudden tragedy of a young life ended far too soon.
